Late Weekend Lunch: Momofuku Noodle Bar

A couple weekends ago, we went to the Scotiabank Buskerfest at Yonge-Dundas Square.  After spending several hours wandering around the many exhibits and circus acts, we realized we were way overdue for some lunch!

That day, we decided to visit Momofuku Noodle Bar, which was only a short walk away.  The "Momofuku complex" is located right beside the Toronto Shangri-La hotel and there are actually three separate restaurants and a bakery in the building.  The first floor houses Momofuku Noodle Bar, the second Momofuku Milk Bar, and the third Momofuku Daisho and Momofuku Shoto.

The restaurant is casual in comparison to the other eateries in the same building.  The dining room is very comfortable and offers diners an unobstructed view of the kitchen.  Diners are seated at large, cafeteria-style, communal tables.  As it was already 2PM by the time we arrived, lunch service was slowing  and we had no trouble at all with getting seats.

Pork Buns (Kunan Farm, ON)
Hoisin, scallion, cucumber

As we were fairly hungry at this point, we decided to start our meal with the Pork Buns.  The buns were so soft- I am certain that the only way they could be this moist is because they were made fresh!  The pork had the perfect fat-to-meat ratio.  The dish, while simple, was delicious.  I will definitely order these the next and subsequent times I visit.

Chilled Spicy Noodle
Sichuan sausage, black bean, cashew

Initially, I was reluctant to order this dish as it came with Sichuan sausage- I had no idea what this was and it made me think of preserved Chinese sausages.  I am happy to report that these sausages were delicious and tasted nothing like preserved Chinese sausages.  The dish had a base of spinach was garnished with a generous serving of meat and cashews.  The noodles were perfectly cooked- chewy and just the right texture. The cashews were roasted and offered a nice nutty flavour. Although this dish didn't turn out to be very spicy at all, I loved it!

Momofuku Ramen (Kunan Farm, ON)
Pork belly & shoulder, fish cake, egg

Again, the noodles offered the right amount of bounce. The pork was very tender and flavourful.  The egg was boiled perfectly with a nice soft centre. While this dish was tasty, it was not as memorable as the Chilled Spicy Noodle.  Perhaps it is because I prefer noodles that don't come in soup.

I thoroughly enjoyed this meal and will be returning for noodles and sweet treats from Momofuku Milk Bar!
