Grab 'n Go: The Pie Commission

Where does one get a fresh, tasty, savoury, and piping hot pie in Downtown Toronto?  For us, this was quite the predicament and nothing immediately came to mind.  This is precisely why we traveled all the way to Etobicoke to pick up some fresh pies from The Pie Commission!  Unfortunately, it seems like we always pick rainy/snowy days to visit this storefront and our most recent visit was no different.

When we first started visiting The Pie Commission last year, it was only a takeout window.  This typically left us shivering by the window as we debated over which pies to indulge upon.  But on this visit, we discovered that they had opened up the inside of the store!  Upon entering, we were met with warmth and a display of dessert pies.

The first of the two pies which we've ordered on this occasion was the aptly-named Chicken Cheddar Bacon mash Pie.  Upon arrival, the first thing we noticed was how hot the pie was in our hands.  The handheld pies come extremely hot and in packaging that allows for easy consumption.  It's crust was baked to a perfect golden colour and its buttery aroma was simply delightful. The pie's filling, although simple in appearance, was exceptionally yummy and smooth in texture.

The second pie was a seasonal offering which offered to stuff the flavours of Oktoberfest into a golden pastry. What we immediately noticed upon cutting into this pie was how quickly it fell apart. It became apparent that the Chicken Cheddar Bacon mash in the previous pie was not only delicious but also served as structural support and an adhesive to keep the pie together. The cabbage was noticeably prepared with not a savoury flavour, but was instead slightly sour (akin to sauerkraut). I can see the appeal of sauerkraut alongside grilled bratwurst on a plate, but admittedly, I was taken aback by the sour flavour in my bite of pie. It should also be noted that the bratwurst and smoked pork was incredibly tender, whereas a tougher, meatier texture would have been preferred.

The experience we had at the Pie Commission on this visit was in line with our previous visits.  The pie-makers of The Pie Commission prepare savoury pies with stunning consistency. Each pie is delivered with a crisp, golden brown top and the smell is downright mouth-watering. While the seasonal offerings can sometimes be a bit questionable, we can confirm with confidence that the mainstays of this little pie hole are indeed, bloody good.
