The restaurant/gastropub is two floors, with indoor dining and patios on both floors. The inside is a bit dim and the air a bit stale, but the patios were excellent! The patio was perfect for a warm summer day allowed us to overlook the busy streets below.
Crispy Buffalo Shrimp ($11)
with a lime horseradish cocktail sauce, blue cheese dip, carrots and celery
As we were both starving by the time we arrived at the restaurant, we ordered two starters to share. The first to arrive was the crispy buffalo shrimp. The shrimp were fried perfectly, with a nice golden colour and an even layer of batter. They were topped with a cocktail sauce, which went perfectly with the dish. Although I am no shrimp lover, these were delicious and very crisp!
Poutine ($6 small/$10 large)
Yukon Gold and sweet potato fries, veal jus, fresh Canadian cheese curds, caramelized onions
Our second starter was a small poutine. We both love poutine- seeing that they came with some sweet potato fries, we simply had to try this. This poutine was okay, I wish they piled on more cheese curds. Also, I can't say I'm sold on putting sweet potato fries in a poutine- something about the flavour and the texture just didn't seem right. Perhaps I am simply not a fan of how the sweet and salty flavours taste together.. I will continue to consume sweet potato fries and classic poutine separately.
Country Fried Chicken ($16)
Originally, I wanted to order the Mac and Cheese. Unfortunately, the dish contains ermite cheese, which is really another name for blue cheese. Although I am a fan of cheese, blue cheese is one of the ones I absolutely cannot stand.
Thankfully, one of the chef's specials was the country fried chicken! I'm glad I decided to go with that as it turned out to be very satisfying and yummy. The chicken came with a side, or rather- on top of mash and greens. The chicken was flavourful and moist- I was really impressed with how moist it was despite being white meat.
Meatloaf ($16)
with mashed potatoes, portobello mushroom gravy and sautéed green beans
The other main we went with was the meatloaf. Like the chicken before it, this was pure and unadulterated comfort food. The presentation of the dish was simple - a slab of juicy meatloaf, a spread of creamy mash, and a few strings of green beans to ease over the food guilt. This dish was tasty and very easy to gobble up- the meat was very tender and it had lots of flavour. The mushroom gravy went perfectly with both the mash and the meat, coming together like a savory heavenly hash.
