Pre-Theatre: Victor

In the heart of Toronto's entertainment district is a posh hotel with an equally fancy restaurant and bar. Located on Mercer St, Victor Restaurant & Bar is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of King St W (just one street north), making it a prime dining location for those looking for a more private experience.

This was going to be the day that we watch The Book of Mormon, so we needed something that was close, quick, and delicious. Luckily, Victor offered a pre-theatre menu, making it an easy choice. The restaurant itself is located inside the Hotel Le Germain, with the interior designed in an upscale modern fashion.

See the Turkey on the menu? We went on Turkey (Thanksgiving) Day! Neither of us got the turkey special though...

Amuse-bouche
Compliments of the Chef

Taste of Little Jamaica, Eglinton West
Steamed Fish Callaloo with sweet potato, coconut, jerk spice

Coconut milk is generally awesome because of its rich, creamy flavour. Unfortunately, this appetizer falls flat in terms of both flavour and texture. The fish was surprisingly lacking in flavour and was also rather tough (and overcooked). The jerk spice added a nice kick but generally, I don't consider heat a flavour. The sauce was also surprisingly watery and bland.

Braised Lamb Shank Papardelle
with mushrooms, pearl onions, sour cream and dill

Pappardelle is awesome. The extra-wide pasta noodles are a delight to slurp up and they pick up a considerable amount of sauce. While the lack of egg in the pappardelle was lamented, the fresh flavours of the dill and oh-so-tender lamb were well-presented. The crème fraîche was a nice addition but I suspect it would have been better paired with a spicier dish.

Beef Tenderloin with Caprese Salad

My dinner date said she really enjoyed the Caprese salad - it's a refreshing option for salad and cheese lovers. The beef tenderloin was also cooked to a medium and had no shortage of good, beefy flavour.

Overall, the dinner at Victor was quite pleasant with no critical flaws to report. The restaurant had an enjoyable ambiance but it may be too quiet for some. Considering the quality of the food served and the service received, it's surprising how fewer patrons this restaurant receives compared to some of the more mediocre options along King St W.
